SAT Test

The Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT, is a test given to aspiring high school students with a desire to attend college after receiving their high school diploma. The test is administered by the College Board which is a national non-profit association that is “dedicated to preparing, inspiring, and connecting students with college and opportunity”.

To register for the SAT test, a student needs to complete a registration form either online or by contacting the local high school guidance counselor. The registration fee is small and the student will receive a test date, time, and location once the fees are paid. The SAT covers several academic skills including math aptitude, writing and reading skills. Scores are tallied and made available for submission to the college or university of the student’s choice.

Basic Components of the SAT Test

The critical reading section, formally called “verbal section” of the SAT is made up of three scored sections. Two twenty-five minute sections and one twenty minute section. The questions vary through these sections and include sentence completions and question about sort and long reading passages. Most of the questions are focused on the reading passages. Sentence completions test a student’s vocabulary and understanding of sentence structure and organization because students have to select one or two words that best completes a given sentence. Unlike the mathematics portion, the critical reading section is placed in the order of difficulty of the passage. Question sets towards the beginning of a section are easier while questions at the end of a section are more difficult.

SAT practice is advised.

The Mathematics section of the SAT is called the Quantitative Section or Calculation Section. The mathematics section consists of three scored sections. Two sections are twenty-five minutes and the last section is a twenty minute section. The sections have multiple choice questions and several grids in questions. The twenty minute section is all multiple-choice. The SAT usually has only symbolic or numerical answers.

The writing portion of the SAT includes multiple choice questions and a brief essay. The essay sub-score contributes to thirty percent of the writing score and the multiple choice questions make up the other seventy percent.  The multiple choice questions include error identification questions, sentence improvement questions, and paragraph improvement questions. Error identification and sentence improvement questions test the student’s knowledge of grammar by giving awkward or grammatically incorrect sentences.

The SAT is a pivotal test in most students futures – it allows a college to get an accurate picture of a student’s abilities and likely performance in a college or university.
