PHR and SPHR

The HRCI Organization offers the PHR and SPHR exams, The consist of 225 questions that are multiple-choice. 25 of them are pre-test questions not scored and used to determine criteria for future versions of the test. There are 4 multiple-choice answers that can be chosen from. The exams usually take 4 hours to finish, and breaks are usually an option for most test takers. These exams certify an individual to practice in the Human Resource industry.

The Human Resource Certification Institute established the SPHR and the PHR exams. They are both broken down to 6 topic areas of content for the tests. The PRH is divided in to the following: 26% workforce planning and employment, 12% strategic management, 15% human resources development, 21% labor and employee relations, 5$ occupational safety and hazards, and 20% compensation and benefits.

The SPHR is divided very similarly to the PHR examination. The categories that make up the content of the test are: 16% workforce planning, 26% strategic management, 5% occupational health and safety, 24% labor and employee relations, 13% human resources development, and 16% compensation and benefits. The difference between the PHR and SPHR is the levels in difficulties and details vary. The PHR exam contains questions that are relevant to  operational and technical levels, and the SPHR is considerably focused on policies and strategies.

It is wise for the candidate taking these exams to make educated guesses on the test, because questions that remain unanswered are counting towards the final score.  The scoring scale for these tests is a raw scale score which only  counts for the questions answered correctly. The scoring scale can range from 100-700 with 500 considered to be a passing score. It is a timed test so candidates must complete the test in the four hour time frame given.
