CSET

The CSET test is actually a series if tests that is derived in the state of California for the purpose of determining the skills and knowledge that exposes a teacher’s competency.  It is administered by the (NES) National Evaluation Systems to regulate the teachers who instruct within the state of California’s public school system. It evaluates a prospective teacher’s abilities and skills  to teach in compliance and become viably certified to work in the state of California.

Basic Components of the CSET Exam


There are four separate CSET exams that are included in the requirements to practice in the education industry.  There are single subject exam, preliminary educational technology examination, writing skills exam, and multiple subject exam.

The Single Subject Exam: This test is composed of the basic courses in teaching such as Mathematics, English, Writing, Grammar, Spelling, Agriculture, Health, Art, Business, Home-Economics, Science, History, Sign Language, Music,  and Physical Education.

Preliminary Educational Technology Exam: This exam includes things relevant to the technology realm of study such as software, computers, and any pertinent technologies that are present in the classrooms. It also contains the concepts and basic management of educational technology.

Multiple Subject Exam: This quarter of the test series includes subjects such as Social Science,language, history, reading, literature, visual and performing arts, and human development.

These exams are mainly consistent on all multiple-choice questions, except for the writing exam which is a combination of an expository essay and an expressive one. Each individual examination takes 5 hours to complete. They are scored in a 100-300 scale with 220 being the cutoff. The NES will need to be contacted in order for registration of this examination to take place. There is an initial fee that will be required of 35-111 dollars. For certification to be obtained it will cost around 225$ for each the exams to be taken. There may be some required and some that can be overlooked, however these laws vary in the State in relevance to the certification and realm of teaching being pursued.
