CFRN Exam

The CFRN exam is required to become a board certified Flight Nurse. It is the specific exam that measures the attained of defined nursing knowledge that is important to that specialty. In this case, the CFRN exam certifies a registered nurse is able to perform many services normal nurses perform, but while in flight. In order to become certified as a flight nurse, it is necessary to pass the CFRN exam that was developed by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. This exam is designed to identify those practitioners, namely Registered Nurses, who have attained high standards of service in a specialized area of nursing. The exam consists of 175 multiple choice questions. The CFRN exam is broken down into five main content areas: single system emergencies, multi-system emergencies, safety issues, patient management, and professional issues.

Basic Components of the CFRN Exam


The single system emergencies section breaks down as follows: cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal and genitourinary emergencies, maxillofacial and orthopedic emergencies, and neurological emergencies. The multi system emergencies section contains the following topics: environmental emergencies and general medical emergencies. The patient management section typically contains questions on these topics, patient care, advanced airway care, respiratory care, shock and trauma, substance abuse and toxicological care, and transport considerations. The section on safety issues typically contains several questions on safety, disaster management, and survival. Lastly, the professional issues section contains questions in the following content areas: legal issues, organizational issues, and patient and community education.

To register for the CFRN exam it is necessary to fill out an application on the BCEN (Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing) website. Once the application has been approved there will be a ninety day window within which the exam must be completed. The CFRN exam is fully electronic and is administered by computer at the Applied Measurement Professionals that have locations around the country. On the exam date, no cell phones or calculators will be allowed into the testing area. The exam is 175 multiple choice questions and takes roughly three hours. After the exam is completed scores are immediately available from the test administrator. If the exam is passed, the certification will be valid for a period of four years.
