ARDMS Exam

The ARDMS examination is a test that all ultrasound technicians must pass before being able to practice. It is also termed as the UPI test or Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation Test.  The ARDMS stands for American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. It is composed of ten main categories and focus areas, and each subject break down accounts for a certain percentage of the grade.

Basic Components of the ARDMS Exam


The first part contains content relevant to elementary principles, and it accounts for 8-10 percent of the persons total grade. The second covers propagation of ultrasound tissues and is counted towards10-14 percent  of the entire testing score. The third is transducers in Ultrasound and is 17-25 percentage of the exam. The fourth is Pulse Echo instruments and accounts for about 6-10% of the total exam grade. The fifth is Principles of Pulse Echoing Imaging and is in the lesser grade range of 6-10 percent. Number six is  Images, Storage, and Display it covers 10-14% of the ARDMS test. Number seven on the test list is Hemodynamics, Doppler, Color Flow, and Color Power Imaging, and it includes a 10-14% rate on the whole test. Number eight  accounts for 6-10 percent of the grade of the exam, and it is on Artifacts. The last two parts of the exam grade are 4-8% of Quality assurance of Ultrasound instruments, and 6-10% Bio-effects and Safety.

The ARDMS exam is configured by the amount of each answer that is correct, and not in an entire percentage perspective. There are alternate levels of difficulty in this exam, and the scores that are calculated have a variance in what is considered passing and what is not. However it is imperative not to skip questions when taking this test, because every missed question can count against you. There is a boundary score in most ARDMS exams which supplies the grading criteria for each alternate level of exam. ARDMS practice is advised.
